Fashion signs: the signifier and the signified
* THE AMERICAN FLAG
The American flag was born more than 200 years ago, it is one of the most famous andrecognized flags in the world.
The signifier for this symbol\flag is that it is made by the 13 horitzontal red and white stripes that rapresent the 13 Bristish colonies and a rectangle with 51 starts,rapresenting the 51 states of the United States of America.
In terms of fashion, the American flag assumed during the years various meanings.
So, in a semiotic point of view, the signified it can beseen as the so called “American Dream”.
The American Dream is a national ethos in the United States, a set of ideals, that includes that freedom i salso have the opportunity to succeed and getprosperity through the hard work.
Over the time the concept of American Dream as changed and nowadays it is indicates the ability, through participation in the society and economy, for everyone toachieve prosperity.
In this sense the American flag has become a sort a symbol for the “American Dream” and it was started to be used on clothes after the Second World War, also for patriotic reasons.This spreading of the use of the American flag has made it also, not just a symbol of a nation, but also as a fashion statement and make all the image of it cooler.
* THE SKULL
Thesignifier for the skull is diffrent depending on the diffrent cultures in which it is investigated.
Most commonly, over all in the European culture, it linked with the sign of danger.
In some societieshowever, it is a symbol associeted with the afertlife or the sprituality.
In this sense, fashion statments may have subliminal deep rooted meanings.
In the case of the skull it’soriginal meaning has been decontextualized.
In terms of fashion the signified of the skull it’s more linked to the late taste for everything that it’s Gothic.
