Science skills- Chapter 1
• The basis of science is curiosity.
• Science is a system of knowledge and the methods used to find that knowledge.
• Science begins with curiosity and often ends withdiscovery
• Technology is the use of knowledge to solve practical problems.
• Science and Technology are independent since one advance in one leads to advances in the other.
• The goal of scientificmethod is to solve a problem or to better understand and observe an event.
• Scientific Laws: describes an observed a pattern in nature without trying to explain it.
• Scientific models helprepresent things that would be hard to see directly with the bare eye. Ex. Atoms, Cells, Bacteria
• Scientific Notation makes very large numbers into small numbers using 10 as a base.
• SI Units:International System of Units, metric system to measure length, time, mass and temperature.
• Scientist can organize their data by using tables and graphs
• Scientists can communicate results by writing injournals or speaking at conferences.
Atomic Structure-Chapter 4

• Democritus believed that all matter consist of extremely small particles that could not be divided.
• Dalton Theory: Proposedthat all matter is up of individual particles named atoms, which cannot be further divided.
Main Points:
 All elements are composed of atoms.
 All atoms of the same element have the same atomicmass; different elements have different masses.
 Compounds contain more than one atom
 Particular compounds atoms of different elements

• JJ Thomson’s Theory: Provided info that atoms are made ofeven smaller particles called protons and electrons. This theory also said that the negative and positive particles are scattered throughout the entire atom. JJ Thomson’s model is also called theplum pudding model because of the chocolate chips (electrons) are evenly distributed throughout the entire atom
• Ernest Rutherford’s Theory: This theory denied Thomson’s theory that the positive and...
