Persuasive Essay Writing
In The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, many serious issues are mentioned. Alcoholism is a major issue on “the rez” and as we know many peopleare hurt, or even die as a result of alcohol abuse.
Based on this topic you are going to create a persuasive essay. Here are your writing options:
1. Alcohol should OR should not be illegal…2. Teenagers should OR should not be allowed to drink legally…
3. It is OR is not okay for teenagers to drink as long as there is an adult around…
4. The drinking age should be _______because….
Make sure you consider ALL sides of the argument. For example, some might argue that drinking is okay because it is a part of a cultural practice, while others might argue that alcohol is a highlyaddictive poison just as unhealthy as illegal drugs.
You must complete all parts of the writing process:
1. Brainstorming/Prewriting
* This can be in the form of a free-write, bubble graph,venn diagram, outline etc…
* It must be submitted with work
2. Drafting
* This is putting your ideas on paper. Don’t worry about mechanics, and organization so much; just write!
3.Revising
* Now go back and read what you have written. USING A DIFFERENT COLOR PEN OR PENCIL make corrections to spelling, draw arrows showing whether or not you’d like to move a sentence and/orparagraph. Basically organize your work
4. Proofreading
* At this point your work is almost finished. Sentences are varied and organized; there are few spelling errors; your ideas are clearlypresented
* PEER EDIT-Someone MUST read your work, because often times others can see errors that we are overlooking. This person MUST SIGN the bottom of your essay and add AT LEAST A 5 SENTENCEcomment
5. Publishing
* Submit your essay typed, double-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman font
