Europe unveils ambitious energy plan
Dutch environment agency has developed a package called "brave" which would make Europe world leader in tackling climatechange and renewable energy. This package has as target reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 20%, below 1990 levels, by 2020.
This new project is criticized bysomebody for encouraging an industry which could cause more harm than good. It says that the production of many biofuels generates more greenhouse gas emissions thanburning gasoline and recent also have been blamed of increases in food prices on the biofuels market.
EC president José Manuel Barroso argues in favor of biofuelsthat this produces 35% less emissions than the equivalent gasoline, however, for several environmental groups this is insufficient because they have to take intoaccount others factors as deforestation or degraded land.
UK environment secretary Hilary Benn say that the main target is setting a clear long term downwardtrajectory for the emissions cap for the companies. Barroso says the package would cost 0.5% or Europe's gross domestic product by 2020 and in comparison the costof not acting on climate change as predicted by Nicholas Stern in 2006 amounts to 10 times that.
On the other hand, Keith Allott says that the proposed 20%reduction by 2020 is a meagre effort. She would have likes to see adopt a 30% target. For this target is necessary the cooperation with EU that for the moment don'thave any target to reduce of greenhouse gas emissions. Even, if we want avoid the global warming in 2 degrees, would be necessary reduce the emissions to 40%.
