After comparing the distinctions and the similarities of both the Athenian Democracy and Roman republic, I realized that although they have things in common their structural form of government isdifferent. Understanding that Ancient Greece never had a single government and each city was a country itself, the Athenians experienced 3 stages of government prior to reaching democracy (Monarchy,Oligarchy, tyranny) (Perry, pg56). Each stage served as the stepping stone towards democracy. Romans were known for their practicality and their common sense, therefore their constitutionevolved gradually and empirically based on their needs ( Perry, pg 121).
Athenian Democracy was very direct which means their government was formed by an assembly of ordinary citizens making decisions andevery one of those citizens had the right to vote. The Roman Republic in the other hand, was delivered from the monarchy and they had a system in which the citizens would choose their representativesand only those chosen were able to make important and political decisions. The important part to delineate is that those elected were essentially an oligarchy that descended from the Roman Empire.Not everyone was considered a citizen or had the right to vote. Athenians and Romans did not allowed women, slaves and Immigrants participate in the assemblies or their government, but the Romanswere a little more acceptable of foreigners which allowed conduit to citizenship for those who served as auxiliary troops in the legions.
In my opinion, Athenian Democracy system best representsor government. With democracy we can assure our voices to be heard regardless of political and social status. Most recently we experienced our democracy by re-electing our President. However, boththe Athenian Democracy and the Roman Republic have helped shaped our government of today.
