The Evil Demon
Rene Descartes said “neither believe nor disbelieve any claim until it is proven indubitable” when dealing with the evil demon/genius hypothesis. Descartes made a skepticalhypothesis, which claimed that there is no reason to think that I’m not being massively deceived by an evil demon that omnipotent in comparison to myself. This position however would then state that none of mya priori or a posteriori beliefs are justified, because the evil genius maybe controlling my vision of the external world by deceiving me all the time. In his first meditations, Descartes hypothesizesthat if the evil demon is conceivable, then I do no know anything, and since the evil demon is conceivable, therefore by rule of modas ponens I do not know anything.
Consider:
• If the evil demonis conceivable, then I do not know anything. [premise]
• The evil demon is conceivable. [premise]
Therefore I do not know anything. [1, 2 modas ponens]
To explain the theory of an evil demon,Descartes goes as far back as to the primary knowledge that he can find within the context of his own mind, where he stumbles upon the preposition ‘cogito ergo sum – I think, therefore I am’, becausethe only fact that he cannot doubt is his own existence. Suggesting the existence of a malicious demon that uses his powers in order to deceive me puts all my beliefs under a huge question markbecause nothing is really know to me then. Descartes allows for the possibility that nothing apart from him being a thinking thing exist, and that all the apparent objects, including the logics ofmathematics, out in the world are nothing less than mere fictions forced upon him by the evil genius.
