THE EVOLUTION OF VAMPIRE LITERATURE

Bram Stoker’s Dracula is the masterpiece of this genre and has given the basics of Gothic and Vampire Literature. Even though this was not the first novelhighlighting the first points of this character Stoker got some influences and created the main image.
So, with this presentation our main goal was to show off the previous influences of this work and tosee how Dracula’s character has evolved during years until nowadays.
Concretely on my part, the last one, I’ve been focused on the idea of a Gothic revival in our times. To prove it I’ve divided thepresentation into three main parts to understand how this personage stills alive and has changed through time.
Firstly, I talk about the social impact of Dracula in the last 20th Century and 21stcentury by giving some quotations which I’ve taken from articles on the internet that reveal the actual presence of these gothic ideals and also talk about the commercial adaptation of the genre tomodern times. This commercial point is crucial to understand the evolution of the character because we will see how this obscure and gothic imagery has turned into a more youthful and romantic/sexualimage.
Secondly, I’ll make a brief review of three literature plays which all have had an enormous commercial exit with many sequels and film adaptations. These are: The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice,The Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith and Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer. I’ll talk a bit about their plots and about the points that make them differ from the classical image of Dracula.
Thirdly,I’ll talk about the influences of this kind of literature on cinema getting focused on some modern titles. Again this will be a great example to see how the vampire character has evolved and changedaccording to new times and new conventions.
