E-CASH IN JAPAN Today, a great many people in Japan pay for their purchases with electronicmoney, known as e-cash. E-cash can be used for the smallest purchases, such as a newspaper, a cup of coffee or a subway ticket, or for bigger purchases such as furniture. E-cash comes in two forms, asmall, thin, electronic smart card, or a special chip inside the latest mobile phones. Either way, it contains a virtual bank account of money. When a purchase is made, special hardware at thecheckout scans the cost of the item into the e-cash device, and the amount is taken off the account. As the money in the e-cash account decreases, the owner fills it up by putting real paper money into oneof the special automatic machines around the country. Alternatively, a credit card can be used to fill up the e-cash on the Internet. One reason that e-cash is so popular is that Japanese paper moneyis not very convenient to use. The smallest yen note is worth more than $10. That means people must carry a lot of coins with them for small payments. E-cash makes this unnecessary. Another reason theJapanese like e-cash is that credit cards are not popular in Japan. With a credit card, an item is only paid for at the end of the month. The Japanese don’t like owing money, and consider creditcards to be a kind of debt. E-cash pays for items at the time of purchase. E-cash is helping Japan’s economy. Thousands of small businesses want to buy the hardware that is needed to scan electronic cardsand phone chips at checkouts. Demand for the hardware is good for the electronics industry and provides employment for many people. In addition, e-cash makes shopping so easy that people buy extraproducts, which is good for the country’s economy.
