Introduction
The book of Hosea is part of the Book of the Twelve, also known as the “Minor Prophets.” Not named like this by hierarchy of importance but by the brief content from every prophet’s message, thus it was often read as a whole. However, several scholars think that the book of Hosea comes first in the collection as a result of the phrase located in the second verse of the Hebrew text that says “the beginning of Yahweh’s speaking”, that is usually interpreted as it was to Hosea that the Lord first spoke among the Minor Prophets.
The passage for this exegesis is located after Yahweh’s command to Hosea to marry Gomer, a pagantemple prostitute. Gomer and Hosea were to portray the former life of the Israelite who once again had fallen into pagan worship and comfort because of the relative peace and prosperity they were living in breaking their covenant with Yahweh. Therefore, this chapter is only the prelude to a series of prophecies that promised restoration to the Israelite because of Yahweh’s everlasting love for them.Text and Translations
One of the main differences related to the passage as a whole is in the Hebrew Bible, vv. 1 – 23 are numbered as vv.3 – 25. In fact, within the Hebrew Bible, chapter 2 begins at v.10 in Hosea 1, as numbered in the Christian canon. However, after comparing the passage to study with other translations including some in Spanish, just a couple of variations were found in thispassage among the rest. As a matter of fact, the CJB, NIV, NLT and NRSV present most of the differences related to structure, instead of changing the actual meaning of the words translated. For example, in v.16 the word referring as Baal (NRSV) in the original Hebrew is Bol-i (which literally means “Possessor of Me”), while in the rest of the translations it only refers as My Master (Baal-i) .Since most of the text in the English translations was very similar, and the key words were translated generally in the same way, the Bible translation used for this exegetical paper is the New Revised Standard Version.

Context
Historical Context:
What we know about Hosea’s origin is that he was son of Beeri, he was from the Northern Kingdom where his ministry took place (Hosea 1:1), and that hisministry began near by the end of the relatively peaceful and prosperous reign of the King Jeroboam II (786 – 746 B.C.E.) in Israel, probably around 748 B.C.E. After the death of King Jeroboam II, Israel fell into an internal struggle not only in their political and social environments but also religiously – since they went back to worship Baal – coupled with the rise of the Assyrian KingTiglath-Pileser III.

Literary Context:
There are different approaches about Hosea’s book, as Bruce Vawter describes:
“The Hebrew text of Hosea holds the distinction of being possibly the worst preserved of all the books of the Old Testament.”
While on the other hand Ben Zvi says:
“The book of Hosea is a written text that shows a great deal of literary sophistication. It may rightly be called aBook – though the term does not appear in the text – because of its written character and because it is a self-contained literary unit with a clear beginning and a conclusion that shows a significant degree of textual coherence and distinctiveness.”
For the passage at hand, it indeed follows the sequence from the previous chapter, continuing with the speaking of Yahweh to Hosea describing thepunishment that was to overcome Israel as a consequence of their former lifestyle, their release from slavery of the would come after a genuine repentance from the Israelite, but the most important, the hope for restoration after their repentance that comes along with the prophecy in this chapter.
