Introduction
The water contained ina glass that does not fall upside down by placing a paper experiment is well known and is described in numerous books. This phenomenon is explained as follows: the sheet of paper from the bottom by aforce due to atmospheric pressure well above that experienced from above where only pushes the water in the glass whose strength is much lower.
PRACTICAL REALIZATION
1. - We are filling a glasswith water. It is not necessary to fill it to the brim.
2. - Put a paper on it.
3. - Holding the paper with one hand quickly vueve the glass upside down with the other.
4. - We removed the handholding the paper and see that neither the role nor the water fall.
Why the paper does not follow the glass?
-Air Pressure is the force exerted on you by the weight of air molecules.
-WaterPressure is the force exerted by the mass of the water molecules. The reason that you are able to flip the cup upside-down is because the air pressure that acts omnidirectionally outside the cup isgreater than the air pressure in the cup. If the cup is completely full there would be no air pressure in the cup causing all of the pressure to be on the outside. This allows the water to stay in the cupbecause the air pressure forces the index card to stay on the cup. This allows you to flip the cup upside-down.
If you do not have the cup completely full,then Boyle's Law takes place. When youflip the cup over the some water drips out. This makes the volume of the air pocket to increase.The only problem is that no more air can enter the cup. Due to this, the air inside the cup spreads outinto the available space causing the pressure to lower. Since the pressure outside the cup is greater than the pressure in the cup, the water stays in the cup. This is how the water stays in the cup....
