FALKLANDS ISLANDS

1. SOME HISTORICAL ASPECTS

The history of the Falklands Islands is plagued by war since its discovering at the end of 1600s. It is supposed that a British captain arrived to the islands by accident. He was going to Puerto Deseado, at the South of the Americas, but instead he landed on the west Falkland Island. He navigatedthrough the sound that divides both main islands and he named this sound after his sponsor the Viscount of Falkland.

Although he discovered the island group, apparently he did not feel curiosity or need to claim the rights over them for him or for the British Empire, because he just continued with his journey. So it was not after 1764, when a French commander founded the first settlement in theEast Falkland Island, that the island group became a colony and with this event the dispute for its sovereignty began.

One year after, in 1765, another British captain named John Byron landed in west Falkland and claimed the island group for his king, King George III. Then in 1767 Spain acquired the islands from France and put them under control of the governor of Buenos Aires.

Because ofthis, Spain and the Births Empire began a political and diplomatic conflict for the possetion of the Falklands. But in 1774 due to the American Revolutionary war both, British and Spain, had to abandon the islands and it became part of the territory of Argentina.

In 1832, British forces returned and requested the Argentine garrison placed in the East Falkland to leave. The Argentina’s commander incharge, seeing that they were military surpassed, decided to leave. The settlement continued and a trade port was established. Then the settlement became in 1834 a naval station and finally in 1840 the British Government decided to establish a permanent colony in the whole group of the Falklands Islands.

In World War I a naval battle, the Battle of the Falkland Islands, took place in December1914. During World War II, Stanley, the capital, served as a Royal Navy station and serviced ships which took part in the 1939 Battle of the River Plate.

In 1960s Argentina claimed the islands to ONU and negotiations were held between both countries but the conversations failed so, in 1982 the Argentina’s troops invaded the Falklands islands. In the same year, three months later, Argentina’sforces were beaten and the UK took control definitely over the islands.

2. ECONOMIC ASPECTS

The island group economy depend mostly on farming, being sheep shearing and wool production the more productive activities for the economy. In 1986 an initiative for diversifying the incomes was approve and a fishing zone policy, which consists in selling licenses for fishing to foreign countries,...
