Biographies
Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Kalischer
He was born in Leszno, Prusia in 1795 and died in 1874 in Thorn, Prussia. Together with Rabbi Alkalai he was the forerunner of modern religious Zionism. Hespent most of his life as a non-payment rabbi in Thorn. In 1986 he declared that the redemption to Zion had began by the Jewish people. He thought it is not necessary to wait for the Messiah to come,in order to go to the promise land. He constantly traveled among Germany asking wealthy Jews for financial aid to make the new settlements come true.
He was highly influenced by the French, Germanand Austrian Jewish emancipation and believed that it was a stage in Jewish life, yet he also believed in the coming of the Messiah.
In 1983 he expressed his first Zionist ideas in a letter wrote tothe Rothschild family in which he explained the beginning of messianic redemption.
Rabbi Yehuda Alkalai
Yehuda Ben Shlomo Alkalai was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia in the year of 1780 and died inPalestine in 1874. He was a Sephardic Rabbi in Zemun an Austrian district.
He was one of the Zionism pioneers. Alkalai studied in Jerusalem and became a good Kabbalah rabbi.
He became noted throughhis advocacy in favor of the restoration of the Jews to Palestine. By reason of some of his projects, he may justly be regarded as one of the precursors of the modern Zionists such as Theodor Herzl.He wrote several pamphlets to promote the idea of settling in the land of Israel. Almost in the end of his life he Colonization Verenie and establish in Chaim Lorje. In 1871 he visited Israel. Heestablished a settlement society that didn´t last much. In 1874 he moved to Palestine and died in 1878.
Moses Hess
Moses Hess was born in Bonn in 1812 in an Orthodox Jewish family. At first he was autopian socialist but then he moved into a more scientific determinist understanding.
