On wearing glasses

Glasses, glasses, glasses. Sun glasses, square glasses, vector glasses. Glasses are all around us, in magazines, in ads, on TV… We live in a glass-freak world in which manypeople have at least one pair of glasses. For some, they are as essential as underwear, they have become part of our everyday outfit. But, how is it possible that a simple pair of glasses has developedinto a fancy accessory that we can not lack?

Those who wear prescriptive glasses may find them very convenient. Through their spectacles, they experience the world unlimited, boundless; a world thatunfolds in front of their eyes to show its diversity and its fascinating images riddled with vivid colors and hues that shortsighted people are unable to perceive (unless they wear glasses). Theyoffer a new and full perspective which might have not been priorly experienced if the ultimate necessity of wearing glasses had not been fulfilled.

Whether we need them or not, any time we come acrossthe opportunity of wearing glasses for fun, we find ourselves giving birth to a new character which, in most cases, does not entirely match with our real personality. We may believe that we aresuccessful businesspeople when we put on fancy black square glasses, a character of Star Wars by wearing those huge 3D pair of glasses we get in the movies, or we may even feel a history geek behind HarryPotter’s spectacles.

However, masking is the most valuable function that glasses have ever performed. We hide behind them. We feel that they are the perfect cover for our imperfections. They shieldus from the mean real world, which is ready to judge our actions and decisions. They are THE flawless disguises of our sozzled expression of a night out, veiling our bacchanal's worst excesses frompublic exposure. They are the best option when it comes to a dreadful and burning hangover, when such a sharp pain irradiates from the back of your head to your temple and your swollen bloodshot eyes...
