Throughout history the debate about fate vs. free will has been intense and complex. The question of whether we are driven by our fate or if we have free will to choose the path we walk on has always makes us feel safe from our fears. Is it that we have a pre-written agenda or are we driven through the path of life by our own decisions? People are interested in this topic, because they are afraid of the unknown. Believing that there is a greater force controlling us makes some of them feel safe from what is after death. On the other hand, there is some other that rely on decisions and actions in their life that would change their path through life. However, the debate in these topics continues.
In “Romeo & Juliet” by William Shakespeare, there are someexamples of the controversy of these topics. Throughout the play we have the main characters Romeo and Juliet, who believe in destiny. However, as the play takes its twist and turns, (they) Romeo and Juliet start to defy their fear of what is after death by threatening to commit suicide. They are trying to find a way to change their destiny. Fate certainly has its important place in this play as loveis not a decision and events lead to a disaster that was not hoped for by any of the families. Ultimately, Romeo and Juliet believe in their astrological fate, but take their lives at the same time. Both fall madly in love with each other, knowing that their love was prohibited. Therefore the Friar, who marries them, tries to manipulate both lovers to make things better between the grudge thatThe Capulet’s and The Montague’s have. He thinks its God’s will to make peace between these families. However it took five dead members of their families for them to understand. Ultimately, Shakespeare suggests that fate exists. Humans will always believe that there is a greater force, whether there is an all mighty God or an astrological power.
The play takes place in Verona, Italy where ourmain character, Romeo, lives and where his grave lies. Romeo a love fool falls in love with Rosaline. Rosaline, which has promised chastity for life, will never like Romeo back. Romeo and other of his friends plan to crash the Capulet’s party. All the ladies from around are attending to this dance there is a lot of opportunities for Romeo to meet a new girl and forget about Rosaline. However hedoesn’t have a good feeling about the party, “I fear, too early; for my mind misgives/ Some consequence, yet hanging in the stars,/ Shall bitterly begin his fearful date.”(I, iv, 106-08), Shakespeare suggest that there is going to be a consequence yet to come for this decision. Misfortune is written in the stars, written in Romeo’s Destiny. Romeo meets Juliet at the Capulet’s dance; both of theirdestinies crossed, connecting them, making them fall in deep love. Romeo’s view of destiny changes after he finds young Juliet. They think that both are made for each other and decide to get married, ignoring the consequences of what their families think about it. After the secret wedding Romeo goes to meet up with Mercutio and Benvolio. However Tybalt was there too; He was looking for Romeo tochallenge him to a duel. Romeo didn’t want to fight because he is now part of The Capulet’s family. Tybalt instead of going in a duel with Romeo kills Mercutio consequently Romeo kills Tybalt. Romeo killed Juliet’s cousin and he looses his mind he had just killed his wife’s cousin, “O, I am fortune’s fool” (III, i, 135) Romeo is cursing on destiny, cursing on who’s responsible of what happened. Aftersome events throughout the play Romeo realizes he has no power over his fate, “ Come, bitter conduct, come, unsavoury guide! / Thou desperate pilot, now at once run on/ The dashing rocks thy sea-sick weary bark! / Here’s to my love [Drinks]“ ( V, iii, 116-119) Romeo is a desperate life pilot flying through his path but he realizes that he can’t change anything to be with Juliet, so he uses...
