Hello, my name is Philip II, I was the King of Spain, I was born at Valladolid on the 21st of May 1527. My father was Charles V, and my mother was Isabella of Portugal. I received my education in Spain. My tutor, Dr.Juan Martinez Pedernales, who latinized my name to Siliceo, and who was also my confessor, does not appear to have done me duty very thoroughly. Though I had a good command of Latin, never equaled my father as a linguist. Don Juan de Zuñiga, who was appointed to teach me the use of arms, was more conscientious; but I had a very poor pupil. From my earliest years I showed myself more addicted tothe desk than the saddle and to the pen than to the sword. I spent my life moving from one part of my wide dominions to another and in the camps of my armies, watched my heir's education from afar. The trend of my letters was to impress on me a profound sense of the high destinies to which I was born, the necessity for keeping my nobles apart from all share in the conduct of the internal governmentof my kingdom, and the wisdom of distrusting counsellors, who would be sure to wish to influence me for their own ends. I grew up grave, self-possessed and distrustful. I was beloved by my Spanish subjects, but utterly without the power of attracting men of other races.
