Fisheries Problem

The Gulf of Baja California has one of the most amazing marine biosphere in Central and South America, and right now its in danger. In the gulf you can find so much different species of fish,mammals, sea birds and plants found nowhere else, and that right now became endangered species by the overfishing. For example in the northern part you can find mammals like the Vaquita which maybe theonly place on earth where you can find it. Or the Sperm whale a very rare mammal also found nearby. The other animals affected by the problems are the sharks, dolphins, turtles, sea birds and muchmore. Another important fact is the Gulf is basically the food resource for many people in the Baja, and there it’s one or the biggest seafood production area in Mexico.
The problems that the Gulfhas are the overfishing of the species that are common for the human consumption, but by the certain fishing methods, other species are affected in a really bad way. One of the worst methods istrawling because they catch everything in there net, that’s what we call by catch, all the animals that are caught by mistake. For example in the shrimp fishing, they use the trawling method and theycatch sometimes everything but shrimp.
Obviously there are some solutions and strategies to reduce or control the problems. There are some organizations like WWF, EDF, CONANP, CONAPESCA and othersthat are actually working on strategies and putting a lot of efforts in trying to help the conservation of the Gulf of Baja California. They already created MPA’s or also called Marine ProtectedAreas in which the fishing is not allowed or really restricted. Fishing permits are now harder to get and the laws and control over it, is much more important now. There is also catchshare, whichmaintains the control over the fisheries where they know how many catch there where and also who is fishing. All those efforts are really necessary for the conservation of the Gulf of Baja California.
