Flora and Fauna of Italy.
The flora of the lowlands of central and southern part of Italy is typically Mediterranean, with the presence of olive, orange, lemon, palm and citron. In the southern areaare also characteristic fig, date palm, pomegranate and almond trees, and sugar cane and cotton. The vegetation of the Apennines is similar to that of Central Europe, with plenty of chestnut trees,cypresses and oaks on the lower slopes, while areas at higher elevations are covered with forests of pine and fir. Italian fauna is poorer than that of other similar areas of Europe. In the Alpineregion inhabit, although not very abundant, marmots, chamois and ibex. The bear, which in the past was very abundant, is virtually extinct, while the wolf and populate the mountainous regions, as well asfoxes, of which there are a large number of copies. Among the birds of prey which mainly inhabit the mountains, are the vulture, the buzzard, hawk and dove. All over the country are the quail,woodcock, partridge, and various species of migratory birds. Reptiles include several types of lizards and snakes and three species of poisonous snakes. Scorpions also abound.

La flora de las tierras bajasde la parte central y meridional de Italia es típicamente mediterránea, con presencia de olivos, naranjos, limoneros, palmeras y cidros. En la zona sur también son característicos la higuera, lapalmera datilera, el granado y el almendro, además de la caña de azúcar y el algodón. La vegetación de los montes Apeninos es similar a la de Europa central, con abundancia de castaños, cipreses y roblesen las laderas más bajas, mientras que las zonas situadas a mayor altura están cubiertas de bosques de pinos y abetos. La fauna italiana es más pobre que la de otras áreas similares de Europa. En laregión alpina habitan, aunque no son muy abundantes, marmotas, gamuzas e íbices. El oso, que en tiempos pasados era muy abundante, está prácticamente extinguido, mientras que el lobo y el jabalí...
