Biography of Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale was a renowned social reformer. She was a statistician who popularized the graphical representation of statistical data. She was a versatilewriter focused on spreading her medical knowledge. But more importantly she was the founder of modern nursing.
She was born on May 12, 1820 at the Villa Colombaia in Florence, to a wealthyupper-class British family. Her father was William Edward Nightingale and her mother was Frances Smith. The next year the family moved back to England in 1821. Her father was a progressive thinker and heprovided her with a well-rounded education. She was educated mainly by her father.
When she was 17 in 1837 she experienced her first calling from God to devote her life to help others. At a timewhen women of her class were expected to focus on marriage and child bearing, she was respectful of her family’s opposition to work as a nurse. But when she was 24 in 1844 she rebelled against hermother and her sister and announced her decision to enter the field of nursing. Her father was a supporter of her desire to lead an active life. Her religious inspiration led her to devote her life toserving others, both directly and as a reformer. She didn’t believe in a God who would condemn souls to Hell. She believed in Universal Reconciliation, the concept that even those who died without beingsaved will eventually make it to Heaven. She worked hard to educate herself and she rejected proposals of marriage to be free to pursue her calling.
A turning point on her life was in 1850 whenshe visited the Lutheran religious community at Kaiserwerth-am-Rhein in Germany where she observed the deaconesses work for the sick and the underprivileged. She received four months of medicaltraining at their institute and this formed her bases. In 1953 she became the superintendent at the Institute for the Care of Sick Gentlewomen in London.
