FRANKENSTEIN
This text belongs to the literary work written by the English writer Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley called ‘ Frankenstein’ , she started writing the story when she was eighteen , butthe novel was published anonymously in the year 1818, when she was twenty-one. The name of the author appeared in the second edition which was published in France in 1823.
This literary work belongsto the Gothic novel, which is a genre of literature that combines elements of both horror and romance and have some elements of the Romantic Movement, which validated strong emotion as an authenticsource of aesthetic experience, placing new emphasis on such emotions as trepidation, horror and terror. Also, it’s relevant to point out that this novel is considered the first text of ScienceFiction, which one of its purpose it’s to explore the consequences of scientific innovations, making it a ‘literature of ideas’.
The passage that we are talking about is part of the conversation thatFrankenstein and the monster have when they finally came across with each other, and its creation tell Victor about all that he has been through. Particularly, he talks about the period he spent with afamily that lived in a cottage, and that he was afraid of showing himself to them because of his aspect. This is relevant because when he finally decides to show his aspect to them they don’t accept him,and from that moment he decides that he would be in war against the rest of the world, which didn’t love him.
About the topics in this text, we can talk about revenge and hatred. It is revenge thatgives both Victor and the monster a continued connection to the world they are destroying for themselves, and it gives them a continued link to each other. In the text the monster says that hisfeelings were those of rage and revenge. Also, the monster feels hatred against his creator, calling him ‘cursed creator’, because he has sent him to an insupportable misery.
