The most important purpose of the Madden dam is to maintain an appropriate level of water in reserve for the operation of the locks and the passage of ships. This aquatic force isused also for the generation of hydroelectric power for the operation of the canal, to their offices and homes of the workers. The water that flows through the turbine passes then to Gatun Lake to beemployed in the operation of the locks and raising or lowering vessels in transit.
