Essay “the Friar”


Greed, materialism, these are two words and very common attitudes in the past and present. Most of people are like this because they like nice and expensive stuff to impressand to get what they want.
The character I chose is the Friar; I chose this guy to try to understand why he does what he does, he was a very talented man, but he uses his talents for greed andmaterialism. He was a really convincing and sweet talking beggar; all his interests lay on getting money from people. He was a master of lies, manipulation and a box of talents, he sings, plays the harp, andknows how to dress depending on the situation he is attending.
People hardly noticed that because he was a merry person, he knew everything about most of the people in town and knew to whom to talkso he could gain money.
He liked to do this to have extra money, with extra money he had pretty things as clothe, jewels, and certain items such as pocket knives to give to pretty girls, and thiswould attract women to him. He also was a great singer and entertained people for more money.

The most popular thing by whom he was most recognized were his confessions; with his ability to talk, hewould absolve you from any sin you had in a unique way depending on the amount of money you pay him, “all you had to do was give him some change and he would swear up and down that you were the mostpenitent person that ever lived, no matter what you’d done or how sorry you really were”.
He was good at resolving legal disputes too, and did so wearing thick, bell-shaped robes that made him looklike an expensive and experienced friar instead of a poor friar who wouldn’t inspire trust and a sense of capacity to resolve the problems. While resolving them, he even changed the way he talked so itwould sound more elegant and nice.
For his begging-district he payed a rent; his brethren did not involve into what he was doing or steal anything from what he gained because he was the finest...
