“Two Worlds”

Two begin with, the first story “Two worlds” it’s about a very good reporter, Karen, who has had a very good idea to film a series while she was reading the newspaper. Everything happened very quickly. The dayafter having the idea Karen went to discuss about it with his producer Adrian. Afterwards, Adrian loved Karen’s intentions and made her start to work immediately.
This great and special idea was to speak about poor children in England, to show people the differences in between north and south children.
Adrian was so excited by the idea that in two weeks he had persuaded the network.
After decidingwhich actor will use for the voice-overs and the kid which will be interviewed, it was everything ready to begin the series.
Rosie, who was the girl interviewed by Karen lived in a housing state, only half a minute from Karen’s office, but it seems like if they live a world away from each other.
She was a poor girl with a younger sister and an alcoholic mum. Rosie didn’t want to spend her timeat school because she thought it was a waste of time, she couldn’t imagine a life outside the state. Even if she studies, she won’t be able to escape from that horrible housing state. She was resigned to live forever in the same place.
Finally Karen’s interview with Rosie was perfect and Karen showed her a new place “Tate Modern”, were Rosie feel free, so she decided to make it “her special place, her new world”.
Concerning the characters I have to mention that the one who had impressed me the most has been Rosie. She was a poor girl but makes me feel like if she was sure about herself and if she was resigned to live the bad life that she had, but with a great sense of humour and dignity, and this is reflect on the text when Rosie said:
“Do you know why they call this a sink state? Sheasked Karen.
No, Karen replied. Do you?
It’s because we can’t sink down any further. Rosie laughed. […] Or because they’ve pulled the plug on us like we’re just dirty bath water and they’re letting us go down the plughole.”
To speak about the vocabulary I have to say that in this chapter I have found very informal vocabulary. The story was plagued of phrasal verbs with -get. Perhaps, or I’mfairly sure, that was because of the plot. The related story was based on a series where appeared people from a poor and low social position, thereby, that’s the main reason why the text has a very poor and simple vocabulary.
To Finish with I would like to mention that the plot of the story has impressed me a lot.
I have never thought about poor children living in England, but making some researchI can confirm that this is completely true.
From a very recent report from BBC news website I have enquired that the highest child poverty rates are found in urban areas.
The most recent figures calculate that 2.8 million children were living in poverty in the UK in 2008-9. Furthermore, what is really depressing is that the coalition government has pledged to end child poverty by 2020.“The Old Oak Bowl “

The second short story it is about Robert Walker, an English school teacher who is very proud of being an English man. He is so proud to be English that he discriminates against foreigners. He does not like them because their families had not always lived in England and many of them are coloured, although they were born in England and they can speak perfectly English, for Mr.Walker these people are foreign people.
Mr. Walker is a nice and kind person, but at the same time he seems to be a strange man leaving alone in a cottage near the school and spending his free time restoring antique furniture.
One day he restored an eighteenth century table and took it to a small antique shop on High Street and gave it to them.
The woman who owned the shop was very grateful...
