VIRIDIANA OROZO GALÁN

Rivalry is a feeling that everyone has felt or has had with another person. And the story Welcome Bob is not an exception. This story is about two men who have a constant rivalry. They can not stand each other because they envy each other, as well asInez’s love. At the end of the story, their rivalry ends because they do not have anything else to envy. I will explain and analyze why did Bob and the narrator have a rivalry? Rivalry is an interesting topic because it is constant in every character of the story. In order to analyze why bob and Robert had a rivalry, it is important to define rivalry and I will do this in my essay.Bob is a young and ambitious man. He has a good aspect. “Blond hair hanging down on his forehead with his smile and shiny eyes” (page 283). He does not like to drink, he prefers to sit and mediate or just relax listening to jazz music. “Bob who drank beer, never more than two glasses during the longest of the evenings” Bob “planned to ennoble the life of men by building a city of blindingbeauty. (page 289) he was a man that was worried about his future. He wanted to become an architect. Bob was going to build a city on the coast when he was an architect” (page 283)
The image I have of Bob is that he is a twenty year old man. His social level is high; this can be observed because he wears suits. Suits are expensive and not many people can afford to buy them, especially not low classpeople. We know that his wears suits because there was a part in the story in which it is described how he brushes the ashes of his suit because he wanted to have an impeccable appearance.
Bob is also a determined man, who takes his rivals out of the competition. He was determined to not let the narrator marry his sister “ no you are not going to marry her because a thing like that can beprevented if there is someone really determined not to let it happen” (page 286) Bob was that person who was determined to not let the narrator marry Inez. Bob told Inez horrible things about the narrator; this was with the objective to get rid of the narrator. The only thing the bob wanted to do was win over the narrator the battle that he had started against the old.
There is not much informationabout the narrator. We do not know any thing about his life except that he has a relationship. He is not in love with Inez he is grotesque man that drinks he describes his actions “I fondled the hands of the little girls at my table” (page 284). He is a resentful man “no one has ever loved a woman as passionately as I love his ruin” my hatred will be preserved warm and fresh” (page 289). Thenarrator refers to Bob in this quote because the narrator is now the one who is determined to humiliate Bob.
In the story, rivalry is defined as constant conflicts between two or more persons. These persons sometimes fight to reach the same goal. In Welcome Bob there is a rivalry for Inez. Both the narrator and Bob feel something strong for Inez but this is not the same type of love. Bob wanted to...
