If archeology is the science that studies theremains
of bygone civilizations, then there is something
archeological about the works of Raimundo
Edwards, Camila Ramírez and Andrés Vial, in that
they take their own civilization and make remains
out of it. They are suburban, demographic, ethnic
and ideological vestiges that unfold throughout the
exhibition space like a hieroglyphic projection of the
city and the people who, in theirceaseless rhythms,
occupy the new architecture of the Galería Gabriela
Mistral, through its immense picture window.
Contemporary cities are teeming with detritus, and
not just the material kind. Some are the result of
fragmented realities, utopian imaginary worlds, projects
left unfinished or incomplete historical processes that
lie, like geological strata, beneath the geography of
the present.The artists gathered here explore these
remains through translations and samplings that
expose certain dislocations within the anthropological,
political and social structure in which they exist. Ethnic
and civic integration, rifts between nature and culture,
and communal utopias are among their concerns
and are the objects of their conceptual inquiry.
According to Fredric Jameson,“Ontologies of the present
demand archeologies of the future, not forecasts of the
past.” If this is true, then the works in this exhibition
practice a kind of anticipatory archeology. Their analyses
of the present moment reveal a certain prospective
quality, and they refuse to rely upon processes that
they believe to have run their course. They are, without
a doubt, works of a most untimelyarcheology.

Si la arqueología es la ciencia que se ocupa
de los restos de una civilización, hay algo de
arqueológico en los trabajos de Raimundo
Edwards, Camila Ramírez y Andrés Vial. Sólo que
ellos toman a la propia civilización como resto.
Residuos suburbanos, demográficos, étnicos e
ideológicos se despliegan por el espacio expositivo
como una proyección jeroglífica de la ciudad y laspersonas que pueblan con su ritmo incesante la
nueva arquitectura de la Galería Gabriela Mistral, a
través de su enorme ventanal.
Las metrópolis contemporáneas están plagadas de
residuos que no son sólo materiales. Algunos son el
resultado de realidades fragmentadas, imaginarios
utópicos, proyectos irrealizados o procesos
históricos incompletos que subyacen como
estratos geológicos en lageografía del presente.
Los artistas reunidos aquí exploran estos rastros
mediante traducciones y muestreos que ponen de
manifiesto ciertas dislocaciones del entramado
antropológico, político y social. La integración
étnica y ciudadana, las desavenencias entre
naturaleza y cultura, las utopías comunitarias,
son parte de sus preocupaciones y objetos de su
indagación conceptual.
Según FredricJameson, “Las ontologías del
presente demandan arqueologías del futuro, no
pronósticos del pasado”. Si esto fuera así, las
obras de esta exposición practican una suerte de
arqueología desfasada. Sus análisis del presente no
ocultan cierto carácter prospectivo, o por lo menos,
no descansan sobre procesos que consideran
concluidos. Son, en todo caso, piezas de una
arqueología a destiempo.

In the materialist universe, objects are not
characterized exclusively by their physical attributes:
objects also embody ideas, values, and links that
determine the spaces they inhabit, their use,
circulation and social distribution. An object has the
power to speak about the society in which it was
produced: it can describe that society’s structures,
hierarchies,...
