Two Sides To Every Tale

Throughout my life, I have always been intrigued about the lives of criminals. They are mostly hated by everyone and have an immoral imprint in history. But in some cases there is an side that media or no one every talks about. In which the person may use their wrath to become rich and powerful but also give back to the community. There are two sides toPablo Escobar.

Pablo Escobar was a figure of wealth and dominance during his reign of Colombia. He became famous as a Colombian drug lord. Pablo Escobar became so rich and powerful in the drug business that in 1989, Forbes magazine had listed him as the seventh richest man in world. (Julian 1) This is what intrigued me the most about this man. That doing this illegal trade made him amongst therichest. Even though he executed those who opposed him, Escobar helped many who lived in poverty. He was proclaimed as “El Robin Hood” for supplying the poor with housing, food, etc. At the same time he is actually considered to be one of the most horrific, drug lord in history.

Pablo grew up in the suburbs of Medellin where he used his young creative mind in doing negative affairs. He was verywell liked and praised by his older brother. His brother Roberto thought young Pablo will become president in his future because of his intelligence and ambition. Unfortunately Escobar wanted money & power at a young age. He took his smarts to the streets where he was involved with small time hustlers He started out making money by sneaking into grave yards at night and stealing the tombstones fromthe deceased he would then sand blast the engraving off of the tombstone and sell them as new grave markers to the Panamanians. He would also steal cars for their parts and would sell it for street value. These petty crimes would never amount to what he was going to become. It was in the 1970s where Escobar took his ventures into the drug world. In the beginning he was dealing cannabis but feltlike it didn’t produce enough cash flow. This is when he stepped into the cocaine business by buying coco paste to start his infamous empireHis reputation grew after murdering many drug dealers in the area, It was here that he began his pattern of dealing with the authorities by either bribing them or killing them. (http://www.medellintraveler. /escobar.html) During the 1980s, Escobar became togrow internationally as his drug network gained notoriety; ( El Cartel de Medellin is said to have controlled a large portion of the drugs that entered into the United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic with cocaine brought mostly from Peru and Bolivia. (http://www.astrotheme.com/astrology/Pablo_Escobar) Escobar's product reached many other countries but majority was in theUnited States .At the peak of his reign, Escobar was estimated by Forbes magazine to be the seventh-richest man in the world, with his company Medellin Cartel controlling 80 percent of the world's cocaine market. His empire had plentiful of luxury cars, planes, boats, and properties. The property that he owned was major asset to his asset amount of cash during this time. Estimates are that theMedellin cartel was taking in up to $30 billion annually at its peak. While seen as an enemy of the United States and Colombian governments, Escobar was a hero to many in Medellin; http://10starmovies.com/Watch-Documentaries/Genre/Crime/page_5 he was a natural at public relations and he worked to create goodwill among Colombia's poor. A lifelong sports fan, he was credited with building soccerstadiums and sponsoring little league soccer teams in the city. Where David Hinckley states “Because Pablo Escobar used millions of drug dollars to build housing and soccer fields in poor communities, he was also widely seen as a hero”. (Hinckley1) Even though he used illegal money, he worked hard to for his Robin Hood image and frequently distributed money to the poor. The population of Medellin...
