Gays and Lesbians marriage rights
Should legal marriage rights be granted to gays and lesbians?
There are a lot of people against the marriage and rights among gays and lesbians, a lot more than people that support this kind of social disorder. I can say that after all I have read about what they think they just don’t like them, or they feel that is just not right to have people like thataround. Kathy Belge says that most of these people chose to be like that and that this behavior is not inborn so they don’t deserve special protection under the law (www.lesbianlife.about.com). Some opponents of gay marriage fear that by allowing same-sex couples to marry, it will lessen the validity of heterosexual marriage. Adam Kolasinksi says that marriage, besides the love meaning it carriesbetween two lovers, is a union with the purpose of creating a family and raising children. He argues that children should have households headed by a mother and a father, because this is what is normal children growing up and being raised by both gender (www.freerepublic.com).
People against gay marriage use examples of others kind of marriages that are restricted to explain their reason toprohibit it, some states don’t accept cousins getting married, or marriage between close relatives, even if the individuals being married are sterile, also it is prohibited to attempt to marry more than one person, or even to pass off more than one person as one's spouse. Other states restrict the marriage of people suffering of syphilis or other venereal diseases. Homosexuals, therefore, are not theonly people to be denied the right to marry the person of their choosing. Adam Kolasinksi says that they do not claim that all of those other types of couples restricted from marrying are equivalent to homosexual couples, they are just bring them up to illustrate that marriage is heavily regulated, and for good reason (www.freerepublic.com).
When people get married they qualify to some benefitsthat cost money to both the state they live in and individuals. Benefits like collecting a deceased spouse’s social security, claiming an extra tax exemption for a spouse, having the right to be covered under a spouse's health insurance policy, so people against gay marriage think that these people don’t deserve these benefits since they are kind of a social misbehavior. Besides married couplesreceive subsidy, this is because a marriage between two unrelated heterosexuals is likely to result in a family with children, and propagation of society is a compelling state interest. Is gay marriage likely to result in a family with children? By statistics the answer would be no and for this reason they shouldn’t deserve the right to get subsidy. Homosexual relationships do nothing to serve thestate interest of propagating society, so there is no reason to the state to grant them the costly benefits of marriage.
One may argue that lesbians are capable of procreating via artificial insemination, so the state does have an interest in recognizing lesbian marriages. However, like it is written at the beginning of the essay there is ample evidence that children need both a male and femaleparent for proper development. The differences between men and women extend beyond anatomy, so it is essential for a child to be nurtured by parents of both sexes if a child is to learn to function in a society made up of both sexes. They are not saying that gays are not necessarily bad parents, nor will they necessarily make their children gay, but they cannot provide a set of parents that includesboth a male and a female.
Some have compared the prohibition of homosexual marriage to the prohibition of interracial marriage. This analogy fails because fertility does not depend on race, making race irrelevant to the state's interest in marriage. By contrast, homosexuality is highly relevant because it precludes procreation.
Lastly, Adam Kolasinksi argues that if the state recognizes...
