Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini was born in July 1883, he was an Italian politician who led the National Fascist Party, ruling the country from 1922 to his ousting in 1943. TheFascist party was composed of dissatisfied war veterans, nationalist and also people fearing the rise of communism and Stalin’s consolidation of power.
* Italy’s economy was weak after World War Iand faced with unemployment and labor strikes which were often led by communists. Mussolini, or Il Duce, established a fascist totalitarian regime with his powerful speeches inciting nationalismamong his people.
* Fascism is characterized by dictatorship, centralized control of private enterprise, repression of opposition and extreme nationalism. The ideology and its implementation inMussolini's Italy influenced Adolf Hitler's own ideology, Nazism, which was a combination of Fascism with extreme racism.
* Mussolini knew how to appeal to Italy’s wounded national pride, and playedon their fears of economic collapse and communism. Mussolini promised order and stability and was not content to merely rule the nation, but with his “Black Shirts” Mussolini controlled every aspect ofItalian life and crushing all opposition. Mussolini’s rise to power attempted to restore Italy’s position as a world power and in order to prove Italy’s military might, Mussolini ordered the invasionand conquering of Ethiopia.
* In 1936, the two Fascist dictators, Hitler and Mussolini, signed an alliance. In 1939 he invaded and occupied his small neighbor Albania, and Mussolini then enhancedhis alliance with Hitler to a full military alliance. Mussolini knew that his military was not very effective, but when the Germans defeated the French and British forces in mid 1940 he thought itwas safe enough for him to attack Britain and the collapsing France too and declared war, and in October 1940 he also invaded Greece, and was repelled.
