Gender Development.
Gender Identity
Refers to a child’s sense of being male or female of belonging to one sex and not the other. Also for young people, adults… foreveryone. Is the answer for the question what am I? Male or female. Inner core of our personality. Very important part of own perception. How do we acquire or develop this identity? Its proposed thatthe process is called: gender typing.
Gender Typing is the process of socializing children into their gender roles. Has to do with learning how to behave as a male or female. Teaching little childrenwhat are the proper behavioral paradigms for men and women.
Relationship between gender and sex. Specifications are not easy to define.
Sex: physiological or anatomical attributes of males andfemales physical and biological differences. Elements: observed and not observed. The first idea: chromosomes and hormones, chromosomical status defines his or her sex. XX (female) XY (male) depending onthis the person will be male or female. We cannot see chromosomes directly, neither hormones. Genitals are the external manifestations of this status. Sex is already given. It developed in the firstmoment of our existence.
Gender: differences that are learned. Is more complex, has to do with society. Very subjective.
Intersex conditions: hermaphroditism. Present intersex conditions in whichchromosomal or hormonal anomalies cause a child to be born with ambiguous genitals or genitals that conflict with the infants chromosomes. Different types. Differences in genitals, differences inhormones…
The point is that some people that present this traits, call themselves transgenders. Do not fit comfortably with categories of masculine and feminine. Gender queers differ fromtranssexuals. They are both transgendered but Gender queers: can live with both genders at the same time. Transsexuals: they don’t feel comfortable with their bodies (girls trapped in boys body or the other way...
