1.11 GENERAL SITE DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS Construction Site Plan The process of minimizing construction impacts on the campus should begin with the design process. Every project, interior or exterior, should include a thorough evaluation of landscape impacts from construction activity. The outcome of that evaluation should be the preparation of a Construction Site Plan toaddress any negative site impacts associated with construction. This plan must be made part of every set of bid documents and should address, at a minimum the following issues: Pedestrian Access: 1. During the academic year, pedestrian traffic on campus is significant. Travel time between classes is limited. Maintaining major pedestrian routes on campus is, therefore, an important element inproviding a customer friendly campus environment. 2. During design, consider the impact on construction work and Contractor access on normal pedestrian routes through and adjacent to the construction site. Provide options for alternative pedestrian routes when necessary because of construction activity. Alternate routes should be capable of accommodating pedestrian volumes required by existing routes.3. Identify ADA access routes through and adjacent to construction site on all documents. 4. Whenever possible, maintain existing ADA access routes through and/or adjacent to construction sites. When not possible, include plans and arrangements for alternate routes in project budget and documents. 5. Existing ADA routes through and adjacent to construction sites must be maintained in code compliantcondition during construction. Alternate routes must meet all necessary code requirements for ADA access. 6. Coordinate any proposed disruptions in ADA access routes with Facilities Services Group - Administrative and Campus Planning offices. Resources for ADA needs include Student Disability Services and Faculty and Staff Disability Services offices. 7. Pedestrian control barricades anddirectional signs must be placed at nearest decision point to construction area to allow pedestrians to remain on existing paved pedestrian routes around construction sites, limit pedestrian confusion, and minimize pedestrian infiltration into construction site. Contractor shall be responsible for providing, installing and maintaining all necessary pedestrian control barricades and directional signsduring project. B. Vehicular Traffic: 1. Consultant/Designer should consider all impacts of construction work on existing vehicular traffic routes and parking through and adjacent to the construction site. 2. Where construction interrupts or impedes normal vehicular traffic and/or flow, the project budget will stand all costs associated with taking necessary corrective action during construction. 3.Consider any possible existing emergency vehicle access needs and make appropriate accommodations. 4. If ADA parking or drop-off areas are disturbed by construction activities, make appropriate alternative accommodations as part of the project. General Site Design Considerations 1.11-1 A.

5. 6. 7. C.Coordinate any construction impact on streets or roadways with the appropriate governing authority (State of Iowa, The University of Iowa, Johnson County and/or City of Iowa City). Any traffic control or diversion measures shall meet all appropriate federal, state and local codes or laws. Contractor shall be responsible for providing and maintaining all necessary traffic control measures through durationof contract.

Construction Work Limits Definition and Fence: The plan should delineate the area to which the contractor will be limited during the construction period. This area should include all construction activity needs such as access, lay down and work areas. In most cases, the construction work limit will be defined by a construction fence. Where a construction fence is not feasible,...
