George Orwell- Analysis of character and personality

Through the works “A hanging” and “Shooting an Elephant” Orwell’s personality and character is revealed. In both pieces, Orwell demonstratesto be sensitive and also expresses his sense of decency. His writing involves enormous pathos conveyed in just a few words. He is an observer, and based on his experiences he critizes people`sinhumanity. For example, Orwell criticizes capital punishment in “A hanging” and imperialism in “Shooting an elephant”. He presents works with aesthetic enthusiasm, describing the beauty or appearance ofevents or places which have captured his attention. He gives the impression of being somebody who knows the sad truth of reality more than anybody else.
Orwell expresses a feeling of partisanship, asense of injustice. He takes sides in his works and shows to be against the British, and all for the Burmese. In “Shooting an Elephant”, Orwell describes the British Raj as an “unbreakable tyranny”.Using these words, he expresses his disgust towards the harsh treatment the British give to others, including the Burmese. He is frustrated about his job and how bad the Burmese treat him. Orwell alsofeels frustrated when the Hindu man is hung and he has to listen to his cries, an “abominable noise”. He feels impotence because hates his job but is fixed to it. So he just kept doing his job as asub divisional police officer of a town in Lower Burma. In “A Hanging”, Orwell also feels impotence about not being able to do something against the hanging of the Hindu. He is responsible because hedeals with every obstacle in his job, from the hanging of a man to shooting an elephant. He doesn’t want the man to be hung, but is a witness of it because he knows it’s part of his job. He reaches theelephant even though the Burmese vaguely give him directions and lie to him.
