The role and functions of Law is to provide a system of order that defines crimes and impose castigation for such violations. According to Melvin, S.P. (2011) “It alsocreates duties, obligations, and rights that reflect accepted views of society.” Law provides a mechanism of resolution to differences of opinion arising from those responsibilities and rights and permitsparties to enforce agreements in the court of law.
Law in a working environment affects directly the corporation and its employees. There are many laws such as Salary and Wage law, Discriminationslaw, Harassment Law, and others. In my current working environment we have seen the corporation confront demands of sexual harassments. These are very delicate situations and must be handledimmediately. The company tries to mitigate the case without having it made public to avoid having it affect the business. Laws are created to protect both employee and the corporation.
Law can bedefined for some people as rules and regulations stipulated to create equality of fairness for coexistence of society. It acts as a mediator to the relations of individuals and is responsible for keepingintegrity of nation’s communities, politics, and economics. They can be viewed as moral standards defined by the community on how to coexist in harmony with one another. According to Melvin, S.P. (2011)the law is a social institution that should be used to promote fairness by taking into account social and economical realities when arriving at legal conclusions.
The Law in the United States isdivided in three classifications 1.Criminal Laws 2.Civil Laws 3.Substantive and procedural Laws. Criminal laws are created for protection of society and its violation results in penalties such as finesand jail sentence.
