Hannah’s daddy is a teacher who barely makes enough money to raise his six kids. Hannah wears hand-me-downs from her older sisters. For Christmas she usually gets used dolls and books. As a child, she yearns to have the beautiful clothes, cars, and homes that she often sees on TV and in magazines.
She is part-ownerof a successful interior decorating business in Manhattan. Her life is what she dreamed about as a little girl. A successful business woman, she has a handsome, wealthy fiancé. She owns her own co-op near Central Park. She takes skiing vacations in the winter and exotic cruises in the summer. Now that she is 30 she is on top of the world.
Then she has a routine health checkup, and her perfectworld crumbles. Her doctor tells her that she has pancreatic cancer. Surgery is necessary to determine how much the cancer spreads. Hannah is operated a week later. The surgeon suspects that cancer spreads to vital organs. Ten days later, the lab confirms his suspicions.
Hannah’s doctor says he can treat her with chemotherapy and painkillers, but it is just a matter of time before the cancer killsher. She asks how much time she has. He guesses that she has less than a year to live. How can this be, Hannah wonders. Doesn’t this always happen to someone else?
A couple of weeks later, she visits another cancer specialist. He examines her and reads her medical and lab reports. He says he agrees with her surgeon. “If you have any once-in-a-lifetime plans, do them now,” he advises.
Instead,Hannah spends her last months in her co-op, hospice workers take care of her. Her family and friends visit her regularly. The moment before she dies, she opens her eyes and tries to say something to her fiancé. She squeezes his hand weakly.
“She is in constant pain,” her fiancé says. “At the end, she can barely whisper. She weighs 80 pounds when she dies. I can’t believe that God allows thingslike this to happen to people.”
