Also known as a geriatrician is the specialist in preventive, clinical and therapeutic for the elderly.
Geriatrics focuses on functional recovery andreintegration of older people in the community when their health has been affected, in addition to dealing with the prevention and treatment of disease.
A geriatrician is a medical specialist who normallyexercised in hospitals, nursing homes or serving patients directly. His professional activities are developed in the plant (where the patients are bedridden), and emergency services, but not all hospitalshave this medical specialty.
This medical specialty is implemented in at least nine countries: Spain, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Netherlands, Russia, and Sweden as a base.Geriatrics is a specialty young compared to others, but not as much as it seems. The term geriatrics was first used at the beginning of the century, in the medical literature to refer to the elderlysuffering from diseases and their treatments. Arises in the 40s in UK, thanks to the intuition of Marjorie Warren. Supervising nurse and later graduatedin medicine.

Warren observed in chronic wards of the hospitals where she worked, as there were many elderly with undiagnosed and untreated diseases. Showed how many of these chronic and disabledelderly, after proper clinical assessment and care and proper rehabilitation, obtained large recoveries that allowed them to reintegrate back with their family or community

In Spain, contrary to whatmight appear and a pioneer, born shortly after the Spanish Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology, chaired by Professor Beltrán Báguena. It has at its foundation under the auspices of the greatfigures of Spanish medicine as Marañón, Theophilus Hernando among others.
