SUMMARY Gevuina avellana (avellano), a nativechilean tree, has fruits of great e c o n o m i c i m p o r t a n c e a n d well d e v e l o p e d p r o t e o i d r o o t s of c o n s i d e r a b l e scientific value. Its r e p r o d u c t i o n w i t h seeds is slow, irregular a n d little efficient. This p a p e r describes a m e t h o d of improving germination of the species a n d t h u s having large n u m b e r o f seedlings of a similar agea n d size. F r u i t s ( n u t s ) from t h r e e different localities w e r e u s e d for t h e s t u d y : L a g o C h a p o in the province of Llanquihue, Puerto Klocker in the province of Osorno and Tres C h i f l o n e s in Valdivia. All t h e fruits as well as t h e seeds w i t h o u t p e r i c a r p w e r e desinfected, sucessively, in m e r c u r i c c h l o r i d e a n d s o d i u m h yp o c h l o r i d e ; half a n h o u r i n e a c h . T h e y were t h e n w a s h e d a n d s o w n on an agar s u b s t r a t e u n d e r sterile c o n d i t i o n s . T h e m o s t favourable s u b s t r a t e conc e n t r a t i o n was 0 . 7 % since, b e l o w this t h e seeds sink a n d die due to t h e lack of o x y g e n while over this p e r c e n t a g e , t h e y lack t h e h u m i d i ty n e e d e d for g e r m i n a t i o n . M i c r o o r g a n i s m s c o n t a m i n a t e d all t h e n o r m a l fruits s o w n t o g e r m i n a t e . This c o n t a m i n a t i o n can b e r e d u c e d t o 2 5 % i f t h e e x o c a r p is sterilized; c o n t a m i n a t i o n is e l i m i n a t e d w h e n t h e seeds are sterilized. ces a m o n g their places of origin. G e r m i n a tion, 9 2 % of t h e seeds, b e g u n 7 days after s o w i n g a n d e n d e d o n d a y 3 2 . RESUMEN Gevuina avellana (avellano) es un á r b o l c h i l e n o d e i n t e r é s e c o n ó m i c o , p o r sus frutos, y c i e n t í f i c o , p o r sus r a í c e s p r o t e i f o r m e s m uy desarrolladas. S u r e p r o d u c c i ó n p o r semillas es l e n t a , irregular y p o c o eficiente. El presente trabajo entrega un mét o d o que mejora su germinación, permitiendo obtener grandes cantidades de p l á n t u l a s similares en e d a d y t a m a ñ o . Se trabajó c o n f r u t o s ( n u e c e s ) de 3 localidades geográficas: Lago C h a p o en la provincia de Llanquihue, P u e rt o Klocker en la de O s o r n o y Tres Chiflones en la de Valdivia. F r u t o s c o m p l e t o s y semillas sin p e r i c a r p o se d e s i n f e c t a r o n s u c e s i v a m e n t e c o n c l o r u r o de m e r c u r i o e h i p o c l o r i t o de s o d i o , 1/2 h o r a en c a d a u n o , y d e s p u é s de lavados, s e s e m b r a r o n s o b r e u n s u s t r a t o d e agar-agar, en c o nd i c i o n e s estériles. La c o n c e n t r a c i ó n m á s favorable del s u s t r a t o fue de 0 , 7 % ; bajo ella, las semillas se h u n d e n y m u e r e n p o r falta de o x í g e n o , y, s o b r e ella, n o g e r m i n a n p o r falta d e h u m e d a d . T o d o s los f r u t o s p u e s t o s a g e r m i n a r sufrieron c o n t a m i n a c i ó n c o n m i c r o o r g a n i s m o s .
