GestIntermec battery management, now (example CN3) and the future.
As a battery ages and has been used and recharged more and more, it will hold less energy when fully charged than it did when new.How much and how quickly it ages will depend on how regularly and how deeply the battery is discharged. We typically suggest that a battery is replaced after around 500 charge cycles which isusually around 18 months to 2 years, but this is very dependent on the usage pattern and whether a diminished charge carrying capacity causes issues in your business process. For instance, if the PDA iskept in a vehicle dock the business process will tolerate a lower charge capacity without impacting everyday use. After 500 charge cycles it will typically hold around 50% of its original capacity whenfully charged.
How much information is available from the battery pack will depend on the age of the battery pack design; older batteries do not give much information, newer designs a lot more.

In the CN3, data is stored inside a chip in the battery itself and records the number of usage minutes which can then be interpreted as usage days, usage hours etc. by the software used to viewthe information. This is part of the hardware design and is therefore the same for both Windows Mobile v5.0 and Windows Mobile v6.1.

This does not tell you the condition of the battery; however you could use this to guess how many days you want to use a battery before replacing it. It does not giveany indication as to how the battery has been used during its lifetime, and therefore it is possible for two different batteries to hold greatly different amounts of charge even if they had the samenumber of “Usage Days”. For instance one unit may be switched on but lightly used therefore not consuming much energy, another may be on and intensively used.
