Gettysburg Address

- Abraham Lincoln biography
Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809 in Kentucky (USA). He worked on the farm of his father. He only attend one year at school buthe loved to read and write. He was slowly attract to politics.
In that time, USA wasn’t living one of its best moments. So when Abraham Lincoln was elected president of United States in 1860 he hadto solve a lot of problems like slavery. He wanted to keep the country united but it was difficult.
At the end a civil war broke out between the northern and southern states. He won the war and keptthe country united.
Lincoln was elected president for a second time. He wasn’t against anybody and wanted everybody to live in peace.
On April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre inWashington by John Wilkes Booth who thought he was the opposition.

-Historical context
At the beginning of July 1863, the Union Army defeated the Confederate Army at the Battle of Gettysburg. Inthat war between 46.000 and 51.000 soldiers died. It was one of the bloodiest war in the history of USA.
The inhabitants of Gettysburg started the construction of a large cemetery in memory of thebattle. Abraham Lincoln was invited by the Major of Gettysburg. Then he began reading.

- Gettysburg Address
The Gettysburg address is the most used speech in US history and is the most famous ofLincoln’s. The address was about a 2 minute speech given by President Lincoln at the dedication of the Soldier’s National Cemetery.
The exact contain of the speech is not known. The speech was deliveredat the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on the afternoon of Thursday, November 19, 1863, during the American Civil War, four and a half months after theUnion armies defeated those of the Confederacy at the decisive Battle of Gettysburg.
