On Saturday August 7, 1819 Spanish and Creole Armies clashed in the field of Boyacá. Each had a different objective: The Royalist Army mission was taken Bogotá and Cleanup wanted to prevent at allcosts this maneuver.

The Liberator Army, comprising 2850 soldiers between Creoles, mulattos, mestizos, mulattos, Indians and blacks was commanded by General Simon Bolivar, the vanguard, by Franciscode Paula Santander and the rear, General Jose Antonio Anzoategui.




Meanwhile, the royal army - which belonged to the third division of the Reconquista Expeditionary Army - consisted of 2670soldiers, of which 2,300 were infantry, 350 cavalry and 20 artillery. His commander was Colonel General José María Barreiro, the Chief of Staff, Colonel Sebastian Diaz and commanded by Colonel FranciscoJiménez.

But for Simon Bolivar did not prevent his strong rival and took the opportunity of his stay in Tunja to monitor enemy steps. That's when the Patriots climbed bushes and appeared withoutwarning to Army Barreiro on the bridge of Boyaca.

Although military action was intense on both sides, had the patriotic forces unit and ease of communication, while the royalists were cut off andseparated by the vanguard Teatino and patriot.

In the end, Colonel Barreiro could not get to stop quickly the Patriot troops surrounded them as "ring of fire". They had no choice but to surrender tothe Patriot Army, with its commander Santander, 'Hero of Boyaca.

The battle ended at 4 pm. Killed more than 100 realistic, 13 soldiers and 53 wounded patriots. Barreiro, near the main royalistleaders and 1,600 soldiers were taken prisoner.

Thus ends the Liberation Campaign of 1819 which was held for 77 days, from May 23 when the Liberator expounded the Plan in the village of the Seventy toHeads Patriot Army, following a military journey from the plains of Casanare, the Andes and the lands of Tunja. The Plan culminated in the Boyacá Bridge.
