Indecent Proposal caused a worldwide stir when it
first came out in 1988 and the controversy
doubled up when it was turned into a movie
(taking in more than $266 million at the box
office internationally.) Paramount kept to the theme
but made many changes, mostly in sidestepping
the interior business such as the Arab/Israeliconflict
that is this book’s subtext and that is dealt with here
as an unintended microcosm of the conflict. (I never
intended to get political.)
However, the moral dilemma issue that is central to
this work seems to be the reason that both book and
movie are still read, viewed, debated, still
controversial, and still vibrant. I wrote the novel
straight, as a drama about a married couplethat
is suddenly faced with an irresistible (and sinful)
temptation. I had nothing else in mind except to write
a novel as well as I could. I never planned to write
“commercial” or “literary.” That’s for the experts to

decide…if there are still experts left in whom we
can trust. I have even complained about this (foolishly),
that sometimes, as in this case, a novel gets to be
so big thatit becomes everybody’s property except
your own. You, the author, have no more say. Well,
that’s how it should be.
The novelist has one job, and that is to search, find
and produce whatever artistic gifts were deeded to
him by God Almighty.

changes Hollywood made from page to screen and
my answer remains, no. A novel must sink or swim
