Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
Gandhi was the leader of India during the Indian independence movement. His revolutionary use of non-violent resistance to cruel colonial rule through mass civildisobedience, saying, "I shall resist organized tyranny to the uttermost." he created a model to fight for civil rights and freedom that he called satyagraha. He founded his policy of nonviolent protest toachieve political and social progress based upon ahimsa (term meaning to do no harm), or total nonviolence for which he is internationally well-known.
Gandhi led India to its independence and inspiredcivil rights and freedom across the world. In India, he is also called Bapu (Father) and officially honored as the Father of the Nation. His birthday, 2 October, is commemorated in India as a nationalholiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Non-Violence. Gandhi was assassinated on 30 January 1948, by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist who felt Gandhi was kind to Muslims. January 30 ishence observed as Martyrs' Day in India.
After getting a degree in law in 1891 from the University College London, Gandhi went to live in South Africa to practice law, following some unsuccessfulattempts to establish practice in India. Gandhi first engaged non-violent civil disobedience as an emigrant lawyer in South Africa, in the resident Indian community's struggle for civil rights. Then hereturned to India in 1915and set about organizing peasants, farmers, and urban laborers to protest excessive land-tax and discrimination. Assuming leadership of the Indian National Congress in 1921,Gandhi ran nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, increasing women's rights, building religious and ethnic friendship, ending immunity, rise in economic independence, but above all for achievingSwaraj (self-governance)—the independence of India from foreign domination.
