THE OLYMPIC GAMES

The Olympic Games allow athletes to show off their physical excellence. However, there are other Olympic athletes who have added a lighter side to thecompetition. Below are some examples of the funny side of the Olympics, both recently and in the past

Ambition

Ambition is a character trait shared by all Olympians. This ambition was the reason Roman Emperor Nero won every event when he competed in the Olympics. The only time Nero was truly challenged was during the chariot races. He was thrown from his chariot but strangely he wasvictorious. It is only fair to mention that the Emperor's opponents stopped racing when they saw him fall and allowed the emperor to get back on his chariot and win the race.

Respect for others
the characteristic that sets a true Olympian apart from other athletes is respect for others on the playing field. This was clearly shown during the 1928 Olympics when rower Henry Pearce stopped his boat for afamily of ducks passing in front of him. He then continued on to win the event.

Going the "extra mile"
Another Olympic ideal is going the "extra mile" to reach your goals. In the 1932 Olympics the 3,000 meter lap-counter failed to ring the final bell because he was watching the pole vault competition.  All the athletes in that race went the "extra mile" in the form of an extra lap!
