WRITING
Music, songs, spoken dialogue and dance. Some of the ingredients of musicals, a kind of cinema that has always been very important. But there are some of them that have been more than only one film and have had a great repercussion in the society, and Grease and Moulin Rouge!have been one of those.
It is in their thematic content that the two films resemble each other the most. Both focus on a difficult relationshipbetween a girl and a boy that came from different worlds. Also common to both films (because they are musicals) is the fact that they are full ofdynamism as a result of the numerous songs and entertaining choreographies.
But Grease differs from Moulin Rouge! in lots of things. Their firstdifference is the context; Grease takes place on the sixties, while the cabaret film is localized in 1900. In addition, while Grease songs arecreated for that film, Moulin Rouge! has mixed famous songs and has included all of them in the story. But the most important difference is the endof those films: while we can see a typical happy end in Grease, Moulin Rouge! has a tragic and very sad end.
The strength of Grease lies in itsmessage and his powerful acting: all the people who watched the film tried to dress and to act like John Travolta or Olivia Newton-John. However,if, as I do, you prefer a sad story with a very good starring (like Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor), Moulin Rouge! is a definite must-see.
