Greek/Roman Women
There are many differences from Greek women to Roman women. Roman
women tend to be more promiscuous, whereas Greek women were more
conservative. The women of Greece didanything to please her husband. Women
of Rome were more “free”. They were allowed to exercise, drink all night, and
host parties.

“Sharing wives is an Etruscan custom”, stated inWomen’s Life in Greece &
Rome. There it clearly states that Roman women were more sexually active with
multiple men than were Greek women. The husbands of the Roman women
often gave up theirwives, they did not seem to care. Greek women had only their
husbands, they were to remain faithful to them at all cost. The husbands of the
Greek women were very strict with their wives.,whereas the Roman husbands
seemed to not care very much.

Also, Roman women could host parties, whereas the Greek women could not
even host their children’s wedding, they believed that nowomen should engage
in any public affair’s whatsoever. Although the women in Greece took care of the
house as if it was theirs, it was still the man’s house. To keep her place, she had tofollow the man’s rules as if it were laws itself and keep her husband happy.

“If, through sickness or fault of judgment, his good fortune fails, then must she
show her quality, encouraginghim ever with words of cheer and yielding him
obedience in all fitting ways possible” , stated in On a Good Wife, clearly shows
that the wife can be very caring towards her husband. That’sone thing the Greek
and Roman women share in common, their great love towards their husband. The
Greek men could have so many rules and restrictions towards their wives, but
their wives willalways show love and support for their husband.
