Irene: INTRODUCTION
It is celebrated on February 2nd, in the USA and Canada.The farmers use this way for predicting the end of winter, based on animal behavior
Theybelieve that if the sky is cloudy when a groundhog comes out from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early. But if it´s sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and return tohis burrow, and the winter weather will continue for six more weeks.
Rachel: BUT WHO IS A GROUNDHOG?
This rodent is a type of marmot. These are solitary mammals who hibernate in burrows.Groundhogs are found in North America in forests and fields.
A groundhog has a tail that is about 13 cm long. This mammal has a bulky body and short limbs. The fur is brown-gray and the eyes areblack. The hands and feet are black and have sharp, sturdy claws. Like all rodents, their incisor teeth continue to grow throughout their entire life
Miguel: ORIGIN
It began as a PennsylvaniaGerman custom in southeastern and central Pennsylvania in the 18 th and 19 th centuries, has its origins in ancient European weather lore, wherein a badger or sacred bear is the prognosticator asopposed to a groundhog.
This party is really important here, they celebrate social events in which food is served, speeches are made, and one people sing for entertainment.
The PennsylvaniaGerman dialect is the only language spoken at the event, and those who speak English pay a penalty, usually in the form of a nickel, dime, or quarter per word spoken, with the money put into abowl in the center of the table.

The first official Groundhog day was on February 2, 1887 , at Gobbler's K nob, although its first reference can be found in 1841.(Irene)
it is a curious tradition that takes 126 years inspiring surprise and festivity.(Irene)
