Saving Private Ryan: A Dependable Account of World War II
World War II films, novels,and memorials around the world have been created based on the events and people that lived during the time of the war. Historians like Gerald Linderman argue that later generations received anexpurgated version of the war. However, it is undeniable how difficult it is to accurately simulate a precise account of any war or historical event. Publishers attempt to best embody the historical facts,feelings, and population of a certain period in history in order to educate people on the matter. Many World War II pop-culture accounts attempt to model the experiences of the soldiers involved,validated by an array of primary sources written during the time of the war. The famous film Saving Private Ryan has been noted as an American epic film as it graphically portrays World War II and itssoldiers. It adequately depicts the war through the raw content and graphical features, as well as a humbling portrayal of the fears for war and respect for comradeship adopted by the soldiers. Therefore,Saving Private Ryan is not an expurgated version of World War II, but a dependable graphic account that efficiently describes the war and the emotional endeavor of its soldiers.
In his book, TheWorld Within War: America’s Combat Experience in World War II, Gerald Linderman states that civilians believe that combat was a positive experience for a soldier (Linderman 360). However, Saving PrivateRyan contradicts Linderman’s statement because it shows a negative depiction of war. For example, the film begins with the Omaha Beach assault in Normandy as American soldiers prepare to land andface German infantry aggression.
