Abraham promised to stop the spread of slavery to help the union.
Southernersopposed him, and that states came together as the confederate states of America.
He issued the emancipation proclamation that freed no slaves and showed people in Europe that the war was beingfought against slavery.

In the US civil war, it was the separation of the south (confederate states) from the north (the union).

Britain, France and Germany were the main Imperialist Powers in Africa during the late1800s.
Europeans controlled very little land of Africa because powerful African armies were able to keep the Europeans out for 400 years and Europeans only controlled 10 percent of the land.Africans conducted trade and kept Europeans for controlling the sources of trade items such as gold and ivory.

*Boer war = 1899-1902; Boers and British fought for control of territory in South Africa.
Erupted when precious resources like gold and diamonds werediscovered, Outsiders, like the British wanted to get their hands on them.
*Fall/decline of the ottoman empire
The declining empire had difficulties trying to fit into the modernworld; Ottoman tried to change before they finally were unable to hold back the European imperialist powers.
When Suleiman I died, he was followed by the succession of weak sultans and with thismany other problems came in. Corruption, theft had caused financial looses, unenployement and students problems.
The ottoman empire fell further behind Europe.
