Guide to Maintenance Painting Programs
1. Scope
1.1 This Guide covers procedures for planning and carrying out a maintenance painting program for steel and other structures. 2. Description
2.1 Maintenance painting of structural steel is required to prevent corrosion and to maintain appearance. 3.1 The standards referenced in this guide are listedSections 3.3 and 3.4 and form a part of this specification. 3.2 The latest issue, revision, or amendment of the reference standards in effect on the date of invitation to bid shall govern unless otherwise specified.

4. Planning and Use of Guide
4.1 Planning and implementation of maintenance painting programs for steel structures are presented in a logical sequence of eight specific tasks. Thesetasks range from defining the program objectives to follow-up activities required to implement an ongoing maintenance program.

A summary of the tasks is as follows: 4.1.1 Task 1: Define Maintenance Painting Objective. Thissection emphasizes the need for a written objective for maintenance painting and identifies several commonly used objectives and how they are affected by timing and economics. 4.1.2 Task 2: Plan and Conduct Condition Assessment Survey. This section provides a general approach for organizing surveys to evaluate the condition of the structure. Three different types of surveys (general overview, detailedvisual survey, and physical inspection) are covered, along with a proposed plan for assessing subunits of a larger, more complex structure and a description of procedures and documentation needed. 4.1.3 Task 3: Determine Corrective Action Required.
