MOSCOW GUM DEPARTMENT STORE
GUM department store. It is a leisure center placed in Moscow, which takes up 75 thousand square meters and comprises 175 retail spaces.
It’s placed opposite Lenin’sMausoleum, along the Eastern side of the Red Square, in a merchant’s suburb known as Kitai–gorod.
It was designed by the architect Pomerantsev Aleksander Vladimir Shukov and built in 1893. At theend of XIX century it became the largest leisure center of Europe and in fact, in 1917 it already contained 1200 shops. In 1928 it was closed by Stalin and was turned into a constitutional building.In 1953 it opened its doors again. From 2004 it belongs to bosco group.
The building features a combination of elements of Russian medieval architecture and a steel framework and glass roof. It wasthe first building using this design. The roof has 14 m of diameter and natural light shines in through the glass. To construct it, 819 tons of iron was needed.
Both outside and inside façades aredivides in several horizontal tiers, lined with red Finnish granite, Tarusa marble and limestone. Each arcade is on three levels, linked by walkways of reinforced concrete.
The inside space isorganized in the Palazzo style, with a mosaic floor in different tonalities.
On the outer façade was implemented the unique illumination Project, where electric lamps lines emphasizes the architecturalbuilding’s elements.
The leisure center presents fashion shops such as Dior, Max Mara, Hugo Boss. It comprises other kind of stores as coffee shops, hairdressers, and beauty shops. In addition, there isa cinema fitted with three kinds of halls: large (70 seats), VIP-hall (16 seats in sofas and cafeteria service), and children hall which has beanbags. It comprises an auditorium equipped with somestages. Exhibitions take place all year long and an ice ground is installed outside on winter.
The leisure center has three floors. On the first one there are accesses and 16 stairs to go upstairs....
