One of the most important Halloween symbols is the pumpkin. In the past, Irish and Scottish
people used the turnip instead of the pumpkin. But immigrants of North America used the
native pumpkinbecause is much softer and easier to carve than a turnip. The American
tradition of carving pumpkins is recorded in 1837 and was originally associated witch harvest
time in general, no becomingspecifically associated with Halloween until the mid -to-late 19th
century.
The Halloween’s symbols are related with stories, novels, poems and films about horror. One
of the most famous horror films isFrankestein.
The autumn season is important for the Halloween’s symbols. Often homes are decorated with
elements of autumn like pumpkins, corn husks and care crows.
The decoration includes themesof death, evil, the occult and the monsters. Black and orange
are the Halloween’s traditional colors.

Halloween is not exactly a typical holiday. Other holidays, like Christma s, celebrate anevent.
Halloween celebrates a lot of things, including the lives of people who aren't with us anymore.
The history of Halloween is not entirely a clear one:
Many hundreds of years ago, a people calledthe Celts lived in Europe and on the British Isles.
The Celts believed that the souls of the dead visited Earth on the last day of October. They had
a festival in honor of these souls of the dead,and they called it Samhain.
In time, the Roman Empire conquered the Celts and took over some of their beliefs as well.
This included Samhain. The Romans combined it with their own festivals. Andsince the Roman
Empire spread across a great part of the known world, the idea that the souls of the dead
visited Earth on the last day of October spread far and wide.
Many ideas from the Roman daysstill survive in the United States and in other Western
countries. Halloween is one of them.
