Hamlet: Important Reasons for His Discontent
Hamlet shows discontent towards his mother and his unclefor three main reasons: their marriage, the murder of King Hamlet, and all the manipulation that Claudius makes to become a king.
First of all, the marriage of his mother with his uncle is somethingHamlet cannot accept easily. Being his mother and the widow of his father, this marriage shows a lack of moral terms and values from the queen: “Hamlet returns home after his father's death to findhis father's heir and new king (Hamlet's uncle) indecently married to Hamlet's mother after just weeks following the late king's demise.” (Curtis 2007). He also thinks about the possibility that hismother might be involved in the murder of his father. Besides, their marriage has been very hasty. They are still mourning his father because two months have passed since his father died. Hamlet alsofeels mad that there are no feelings of sadness about the death of the king because his people are celebrating the marriage.
Secondly, Hamlet is rageful about the murder of his father. The lust ofthe new king is exhibited everywhere and it is a good reason to kill the king. Claudius shows his happiness of being such an important person. He is now able to rule the country, to make decisions,and to be treated as a king: “When we first see Claudius, he strikes us an intelligent and capable ruler. He gives a speech to make his court and country proud, addressing his brother's death and thepotential conflict with Norway.” (Mabillard 2000). Therefore, Claudius exhibits his greed as well. He does everything to achieve his goals. It does not matter if he has to kill his own brother andmarry his sister in law to become a king. Nothing is before his own plans.
Lastly, Hamlet is furious because he is aware of the manipulation that Claudius makes over his people. Claudius not only...
