Summary.
The story is about a man called Humphrey who hated the people because he said that they were always asking questions, they wanted to come into your house or they wanted to take you out fordrinks and he couldn't stand it, so he invented that his mother was in bed and that he had to look after her everytime.
One morning the door bell rang, it was Reg Carter, the postman, with a bigpackage and a letter. Humphrey opened the letter. He had won a large sum of money in a competition. He was very excited, so he went to talk to Browlow, his boss, because he wanted to leave the company andgo to Canada.
When he back home, he said "hi" to his fake mom and suddenly he saw Reg Carter coming from the kitchen. He had forgotten the cooker on and the curtains were on fire. The postman toldhim that nobody was in the house, even "his mother". So Humbhrey said that his mother had died two days ago. But Reg didn't believe him.
The following week, Sergeant Wallace came to his house to asksomething about his mother. He refused to tell the truth and Wallace said that that was maybe a crime. Humphrey said there was no crime and he explained the real story, that he had invented hismother to say that he had to look after her and that was the reason why he never went out with nobody and nobody came into his house because he didn't like that.
Two days before he was going to live toCanada, the door bell rang again. It was his real mother who was interested in Humphrey's money. He told her that she wasn't his mother and killed her. Next morning he went to the police station to saywhat he had done, but the sergeant did not believe him, so he went to Canada without going to prison.
